FAYETTEVILLE, ARK. - The 20th-ranked Duke women's cross country team placed second at the Chile Pepper XC Festival in Fayetteville, Ark., on Saturday, while the men's team took 26th place at the NCAA Preview Meet in Terre Haute, Ind.
Senior Emily McCabe continues to lead the Blue Devil women, as she posted a fourth-place finish in a 349-woman race. McCabe finished the 6K run with a time of 20:22.40, again recording Duke's top finish. Sophomore Maddie McKeever posted the next-highest finish for Duke, coming in in ninth place, as the duo again provided a strong one-two punch for Duke.
Rounding out the top seven finishers for the Blue Devils were Kate Van Buskirk (34th), Elle Pishny (43rd), Whitney Anderson (53rd), Natasha Roetter (66th) and Ana Farias-Eisner (78th).
The Duke women posted a team score of 133 points, good for second place behind fourth-ranked Arkansas with 41 points. Texas Tech's Sally Kipyego finished the course in 19:29.30 to take first place overall.
Action in Indiana saw the Duke men's squad take 26th place, posting 640 points. Senior captain Keith Krieger recorded the highest finish for Duke, coming in in 70th place with a time of 24:40.90 in a field of 243 runners. Junior captain Chris Spooner posted the next-highest finish, with a 109th-place showing.
Kevin McDermott (133rd), Geary Gubbins (161st), Dan Daly (167), Chas Salmen (193) and Tradelle Ward (201st) rounded out the top seven for Duke.
Winning the race was Martin Fagan of Providence (23:30.30), while fourth-ranked Colorado came away with the team win, posting 75 points.
Four Blue Devil men also took place in the open race, as the top Duke finish nod went to Devin McDaniel (24th place).
Next up for the Duke cross country teams are the ACC Championships, held in Charlottesville, Va.
