PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - The fourth-ranked Duke field hockey team improved to 11-3 on the season on Tuesday afternoon following a 5-1 win over Drexel. Sophomore Marian Dickinson netted three goals on the day, picking up her third hat trick of the season.
Each team held the other scoreless in the first half as the first goal of the game would come on a Duke penalty corner with no time left on the clock when senior Amy Stopford netted her 11th goal of the season to put the Blue Devils up 1-0. Dickinson and freshman Brooke Patterson each recorded assists on the play.
Duke's offense flared up in the second half as the Blue Devils scored four goals to Drexel's one.
Dickinson scored three consecutive goals for Duke as she first found the net on a pass from junior Courtney Elliott, then slipped two unassisted shots past Dragon goalie, Colleen McAndrew to put the Blue Devils up 4-0. The hat trick - her third of the season - upped Dickinson's season-goal total to 17, and gave her 42 points on the season.
At the 60-minute mark, sophomore Laura Suchoski found the net for the second time this season to score Duke's final goal and increase the Blue Devil lead to 5-0 with 10 minutes remaining in the contest.
Drexel got on the board with a goal the 67:51 mark, as Amanda Kicera slipped a shot past Duke junior goalie Caitlin Williams, but the Blue Devils would go on to post a 5-1 win, grabbing their fourth consecutive victory and third in four days.
Williams notched two saves versus the Dragons, while McAndrew recorded five on the day. Duke got off 12 shot attempts and held Drexel to five, as the Blue Devils improved to 11-3 (2-2 ACC) and the Dragons fell to 6-8 on the season. Duke had nine penalty corners, while Drexel had three.
The Blue Devils have scored 11 second-half goals in three games versus No. 1 Maryland, then-No. 16 Villanova and Drexel. The four-day trip to Maryland and Pennsylvania saw Duke out-shoot their opponents, 43-23 and out-score their opponents, 14-3. Dickinson posted 10 points on four goals and two assists, while Williams recorded 15 saves for a save percentage of .517.
In the latest STX/NFHCA Division I poll, released Tuesday, Duke jumped one spot to No. 4, as Maryland, Wake Forest and Old Dominion sit at No. 1, 2 and 3, respectively.
Next weekend will see Duke hit the road again for two games in Norfolk, Va., as the Blue Devils take on William & Mary on Saturday at 2 p.m. and No. 3 Old Dominion on Sunday at 1 p.m. Both games are set to take place at ODU's Foreman Field. Duke will return home on Oct. 21 to host No. 13 California at Williams Field at 1 p.m., and will close out the regular season at home on Oct. 28 versus No. 10 Virginia.
