DURHAM, N.C. ?
Senior Nicole Dudek and sophomore Marcy Burns paced a Duke attack to defeat No. 10 Iowa in field hockey Saturday. The No. 4 Blue Devils edged the Hawkeyes, 3-2, in their second of three consecutive home games at Williams Field to improve their record to 5-1.
Duke took an early lead when Dudek found the back of the net off a penalty corner with assists from Burns and freshman Marian Dickinson in the sixth minute of play. Burns upped the score 28 minutes into the game by slipping a pass from freshman Ashley Pultorak past Iowa's Lissa Munley to give the Blue Devils a 2-0 advantage at halftime.
Burns netted her second goal of the game and fourth of the season nearly three minutes into the half on an unassisted goal. Iowa came up with two second-half goals from Katie Naughton and Kara Zappone but was unable to pull ahead of the Blue Devils, who held their opponent to four shots in the second half.
"We're very happy with the outcome," said head coach Beth Bozman. "They put a lot of pressure on us in the second half, and we had a number of opportunities. We just need to capitalize on them."
Sophomore goalie Caitlin Williams registered her fifth win in goal in 2005 with six saves. Dudek's goal was her sixth this season, tying her for the lead among her teammates. Senior Katie Grant has also scored six goals for Duke in 2005.
The Blue Devils were playing without four starters, as Grant, Cara-Lynn Lopresti, Amy Stopford and Hilary Linton are competing at the Junior World Cup in Santiago, Chile.
Duke returns to Williams Field Sunday to host Old Dominion at 1:30 p.m. The Monarchs (3-4) fell 1-0 to third-ranked North Carolina Saturday in Chapel Hill.
