DURHAM, N.C. ?
Old Dominion topped the No. 4 Duke field hockey team, 5-2, in a hard-fought battle at Williams Field Sunday. Four different players picked up points in the contest against the No. 9 Monarchs, who were playing with a full roster. The Blue Devils competed without four starters, as senior Katie Grant and juniors Cara-Lynn Lopresti, Amy Stopford and Hilary Linton are competing at the Junior World Cup in Santiago, Chile.
Old Dominion netted three unanswered goals in the first half, but Duke rallied in the second, tying the Monarchs 2-2 for the period. The Blue Devils led their opponent 12-9 in shots and 5-2 in corners in the second half.
"They came at us really hard in the first half, and we were expecting that," said head coach Beth Bozman. "We didn't play as we prepared, but we made some good corrections in the second half. We've been talking all year about individual responsibility and team effort, and I think we did a good job of that in the second half."
Sophomore Marcy Burns tallied her third goal of the weekend and fifth of the year on a pass from freshman Ashley Pultorak six minutes into the second half. Freshman Marian Dickinson came up 15 minutes later with her fifth goal of the season off an assist from classmate Julie Tromp.
Senior Christy Morgan, who has been sidelined for much of the season due to a back injury, made her first 2005 start in goal and recorded 14 saves.
Duke was coming off a win over No. 10 Iowa, 3-2, Saturday, making the game against Old Dominion the seventh straight for the Blue Devils against a Top 20 team in the current STX/NFHCA Division I National Coaches Poll.
Duke continues its 2005 season Friday when the team travels to Chapel Hill for a contest against third-ranked North Carolina at 7 p.m. The Blue Devils will be missing Grant, Lopresti, Stopford and Linton for the next two games.
