LOUISVILLE, KY. --
Freshman Marian Dickinson led Duke to a strong start to the 2005 field hockey season Saturday, picking up three goals and an assist to help defeat Louisville, 7-0, on the Cardinals' home turf. Five different Blue Devils scored in the match, advancing the team to the final round of the second annual Champion's Tournament.
Duke's first goal came just 3:44 into the game when Dickinson scored off a pass from junior Cara-Lynn Lopresti. Dickinson continued her strong rookie performance, assisting on a goal by senior Nicole Dudek, a 2004 third-team All-America, with 9:04 off the clock.
Senior Katie Grant, a 2004 NCAA All-Tournament team selection, added to the Duke lead by throwing in an unassisted goal at 15:15 in the first half. Freshman Ashley Pultorak and junior Amy Stopford, also a 2004 NCAA All-Tournament team selection, teamed up on a penalty corner at 25:48 to up the score to 4-0 heading into halftime.
The halftime break was no deterrent to the Duke offense, as it took Dickinson just over eight minutes to earn her second and third goals. Junior Hilary Linton, a 2004 second-team All-America, assisted Dickinson's first goal of the second half at 42:36, and Dickinson followed with an unassisted goal at 43:10.
Stopford scored her first goal of the year with 12:32 left in the game off a penalty stroke to bring the contest to its final score, 7-0.
The Blue Devils dominated on offense, nearly doubling the Cardinals' shots. Duke took 20 shots while holding Louisville to 11. In the first half, the Blue Devils outshot their opponent 11-2. Sophomore Caitlin Williams started in goal, registering 10 saves for the day on Louisville's 11 shots.
Duke faces Michigan State Sunday at 2 p.m. at Louisville's Trager Stadium in the title game of the Champion's Tournament. Michigan State pulled out a narrow win over Boston University earlier Saturday, edging the Terriers, 4-3, in overtime.
