LOUISVILLE, KY. --
Senior Nicole Dudek recorded two goals and an assist to lead the Duke field hockey team to a 3-0 victory over Michigan State Sunday in the championship game of the second annual Champion's Tournament. The Blue Devils were coming off a 7-0 win over host Louisville Saturday that advanced them to the final game.
Dudek was the cornerstone of the Duke offense in the first half, registering two goals in less than three minutes. Her first scoring opportunity of the contest was an unassisted goal at the 13:10 mark. Just over 15 minutes into the game, she paired with fellow senior Katie Grant, who assisted Dudek's second goal at 15:38, to give the Blue Devils a 2-0 first-half advantage. Dudek and Grant were the nation's top scoring duo in 2004.
Freshman Julie Tromp recorded her first collegiate goal in the second half, scoring on a penalty corner with an assist from Dudek.
The Blue Devils controlled the offensive tempo of the match, outshooting the Spartans, 16-7 and holding a 7-4 advantage on penalty corners. Sophomore goalie Caitlin Williams registered four saves on Michigan State's seven shots.
The two teams traded places from a year ago when Duke fell to the Spartans, 4-1, in the Champion's Tournament title game at Michigan State. They last matched up in the final four of the 2004 NCAA Tournament, where Duke won 5-2 to advance to the championship.
The Blue Devils' record improves to 2-0 on the season with the next action occurring next weekend at the University of Delaware. Duke will face the Blue Hens of Delaware Saturday at 11:30 a.m. before battling Ohio State Sunday at the same time.
