Blake Camp and
Michael Videira have each been named to the Hermann Trophy preseason watch list in an announcement today by the Missouri Athletic Club. A panel of coaches in the National Soccer Coaches' Association of America (NSCAA) choose the list each year. The Hermann Trophy is an award given annually to the nation's top collegiate player.
Camp, a senior from Danielsville, Ga., was named to the watch list for the second straight season. This preseason he has also been named to the College Soccer News Preseason All-America first team. In 2004 he was a third team NSCAA/adidas All-America selection after finishing the season with nine goals and six assists. He is a two-time All-ACC first team pick and was a first team All-South Region choice last season. He was named to the Freshman to Watch list in 2002. As a sophomore, he led the ACC with ten assists and was second on the team with 18 points. He finished the season tied for 20th in the nation in assists per game.
Videira, a sophomore from Milford, Mass., is one of five sophomores to appear on the list. He has also been named to the Soccer America and College Soccer News preseason All-America teams. He was named the Soccer America and ACC Freshman of the Year last season. He finished the season with four goals and 15 assists. His 15 assists were second in the ACC and he was a third team All-South Region choice. He was named to the National All-Freshman first team by Top Drawer Soccer and was a first team Freshman All-America pick by College Soccer News.
Duke has had five players earn the Hermann Trophy in school history. Ali Curtis was the last to do so in 2000 when he scored 17 goals and finished with 40 points. Other winners of the prestigious award are Joe Ulrich (1982),
Mike Jeffries (1983), Tom Kain (1985) and
John Kerr (1986).
The Blue Devils have an exhibition game at UConn on Saturday, Aug. 27. They will open the regular season at home on Thursday, Sept. 1 at 7 p.m. against Long Island.
