Durham, N.C. - The Blue Devils fell just short in their first of two exhibition games on Sunday evening as UNC-Greensboro scored a goal midway through the second half to come away with the 1-0 victory.
Scott Jones put in the game's only goal from ten yards out at the 75:47 mark. Randi Patterson forced
Justin Papadakis, the Blue Devils' Sophomore goalkeeper, to come at him before sending the pass over to Jones for the easy put in.
Duke had their best shot to tie the score with just over five minutes to play in the game.
Michael Videira, the 2004 National and ACC Freshman of the Year, blasted a ball from 25 yards away that Spartans' freshman goalkeeper Chad Dickerson had to make a diving save on to stop it from going in. The Blue Devils had a number of chances and finished the game with a 25-11 advantage in total shots, but the Spartans were able to hold them scoreless.
“I was amazed we didn't score goals with the scoring chances we had,” said Duke Head Coach
John Rennie. “It was a great preseason game to watch. I am very happy with the way we played despite having some key players out of the lineup. We know the goals will come if we keep playing the way we did tonight.”
UNC Greensboro had a goal taken away earlier in the game. They scored on a header off a corner kick, but the goal was disallowed as the ball had gone out of bounds. They also had a scoring chance in the first half when Patterson fired a shot hight that Papadakis tipped just over the goal.
Duke will play one more exhibtion game before the regular season opener. On Saturday, Aug. 27 they travel to Storrs, Conn. to take on #5 UConn. They open the regular season at home on Thursday, Sept. 1 against Long Island.
