PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - The women's track and field team made history Friday as they captured the school's first-ever Penn Relays championship, taking first place in the distance medley relay. Meaghan Leon, Lindsey Owen, Lauren Matic and Shannon Rowbury earned the win in a school-record time of 11:10.18, besting the previous five-year record by just over a second.
"This is the biggest win in school history for Duke track and field," said Head Coach Norm Ogilvie. "The DMR is the premier event at this meet with the best runners in each part of the race, so it's a huge accomplishment."
With just over 400 meters to go, Rowbury pushed out of the tight pack past Arkansas, North Carolina and Villanova. The Blue Devils had been in the second position through much of the race, but ACC Champion Rowbury hung behind the Arkansas miler Dacia Barr until the 200-meter mark when she pushed forward to the win.
In other action, Michael Hatch and Chas Salmen qualified for IC4A competition in the 10,000-meter race with times of 30:31.48 and 31:07.92, respectively. The Duke men have now qualified four runners for the 10k race at IC4As.
The women's field event athletes also had a strong first day, with Kelly Reynolds throwing the hammer a school-record 54.38 meters (178-5) to take seventh place in the contest. Daina Pucurs, who established the school record in the javelin last weekend at the ACC Championships, captured second place in the event with a 45.88-meter (150-6) finish Friday. Additionall, Lara Jones placed fourth in pole vault at 3.85 meters to qualify for the ECAC Championships in May.
The Penn Relays will continue Friday and Saturday at Pennsylvania's Franklin Field in Philadelphia, Pa. Results are available as the day progresses from Flash Results or the Penn Relays Web site.
