DURHAM, N.C. - Four players netted three goals apiece as Blue Devils powered passed Richmond 18-6 Sunday afternoon at Koskinen Stadium. With the win, No. 4 Duke moves to 5-0 on the year, tying the 2002 season as the best season-opening streak in school history, while Richmond falls to 0-2.
Katie Chrest, Leigh Jester, Rachel Sanford and Kristen Waagbo all scored hat tricks in the win against the Spiders, forcing a 30-22 shot advantage. Sanford also tallied three draw controls to lead Duke's 17-9 draw control margin, while Caline McHenry dominated defensively with three caused turnovers. Duke goalie Megan Huether recorded eight saves and three ground balls before being relieved by back-up keeper Regan Bosch with 6:26 to play in the game.
Katie Laschinger struck first the Devils, scoring her first of two goals on a free position shot 2:31 into the game to give Duke the early lead. Sara Allen tied the score at 1-1 before the Blue Devil attack rattled off four straight goals to go up 5-1 with 15:02 to play in the first half. Richmond's leading scorer Kristen Habicht fired two unassisted goals to bring the Spiders to within two, but Sanford blew it open with two consecutive goals of her own to stretch the Duke lead.
With the score 7-3 in favor of the Blue Devils, Richmond's Morgan Vahue converted on a free position shot, but Laschinger, Sanford and Jester all scored goals to end the half with a 10-4 lead.
The Blue Devils continued to dominate in the second stanza, scoring the first four goals of the period, including two from Jessica Adam, to go up 14-4 and force running time. Caroline McGuire put up a tally for the Spiders, but again, Duke fired back with four goals of its own to stretch out the lead to 18-5. Habicht scored the final goal of the game with just over two minutes to play on a free position against Bosch to come up with the final 18-6 mark.
The Blue Devils return to action Saturday, Mar. 12 against North Carolina at noon. The Duke men's team will face Loyola following the women's game at 3:00 p.m.
