ST. LOUIS, Mo. - Duke senior Frank Cornely closed out his excellent collegiate career at this weekend's NCAA Championships. Cornely went 1-1 on the second day, finishing with a 2-2 record at the tournament, the same record he posted a season ago. He was only two wins shy of becoming Duke's first wrestling All-American. The 184-pounder ends his career as a two-time ACC champion and had more victories at the NCAA Championships (4) than any Blue Devil wrestler in the history of the program.
Cornely faced off against two Big Ten opponents on day two. First, he defeated Andy Rios of Indiana in a see-saw 14-13 bout. The match went back and forth in the first period with a late set of back points giving Cornely an 8-7 lead. The action continued in the second period with Cornely scoring another takedown and ending the period tied at 11-11. Rios let Cornely go to start the third period, but a stalling point kept the score tied. After an injury timeout, Cornely finally picked up what would stand as the winning takedown, holding on for the 14-13 margin.
Roger Kish of perennial powerhouse Minnesota was Cornely's next opponent. This time, Cornely got off to a good start, scoring a takedown in the first 15 seconds. He could not sustain the momentum, however, and Kish used a combination of good leg-shot takedowns and a tough ride from the top position to defeat the Blue Devil, 7-2.
