DURHAM, N.C. - Top-ranked Princeton went on a 3-0 run late in the game to break a 4-4 tie and come away with a 7-4 win over the No. 5 Blue Devils Wednesday afternoon on the cold and rain-soaked FieldTurf Facility on Duke's West Campus. Rachel Sanford netted a pair of goals for the Blue Devils and led the team defensively with three caused turnovers and five ground balls, but it was not enough as Duke dropped their second-straight game to fall to 5-2 on the season.
Lindsey Biles put away two for the Tigers, while goalie Sarah Kolodner tallied nine saves to lead Princeton to its third-straight victory and a 3-0 start to the year. Biles also notched four caused turnovers and picked up four ground balls in the win.
The Tigers opened scoring early with an unassisted goal from Ingrid Goldberg at the 29:46 mark. Katie Lewis-LaMonica and Elizabeth Pillion continued the scoring effort, converting one free position shot each over the next 11:20 to build a 3-0 lead with 18:26 to play in the first half.
Sanford retaliated with two consecutive goals, the first coming off an assist from Jessica Adam at 16:06 and the next on an unassisted drive five minutes later off a caused Princeton turnover to send the teams into halftime with a 3-2 score.
After a rousing halftime speech from Head Coach Kerstin Kimel, the Blue Devils came out strong in the second half, tying up the score at 3-3 off an unassisted goal from Leigh Jester just over 1:30 into the second stanza. Biles came back with her second tally of the game to regain the lead for Princeton after converting a pass from Kathleen Miller.
The Blue Devils tied the score up again with a Katie Chrest goal from Caroline Cryer at the 20:27 mark in the second half for the 4-4 tie. Both teams remained scoreless for the next 15 minutes despite a 6-1 shot advantage for Duke and five Princeton turnovers during that period.
Biles broke the game open with an empty-net goal with 5:22 to play and Kathleen Miller followed at 2:15 to put the Tigers up 6-4 with the game winding down. The Blue Devils won the ensuing draw control, but quickly turned the ball over and Princeton would retain possession for the remainder of the game. Leigh Slonaker put in a final goal for the Tigers with nine seconds to play to give them the 7-4 win.
The Blue Devils will look to rebound against Georgetown on Saturday, Mar. 19 in their 1:00 p.m. game in Washington, D.C. Duke was 0-2 against the Hoyas last season, including a 12-13 overtime loss in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
