DURHAM, N.C. - Kristen Waagbo led the fourth-ranked Blue Devils with four goals and two assists to propel Duke passed visiting Denver 21-6 Sunday afternoon at Koskinen Stadium. With the win, the Blue Devils moved to 2-0 on the season, while the Pioneers drop to 0-2.
Thirty players saw action on the field for Duke, with 12 scoring at least one goal and two others adding assists. Denver goalie Steph Schneider racked up 17 saves as the Blue Devils outshot the Pioneers 48-16 over the span of 60 minutes.
Katie Chrest opened scoring for Duke four minutes into the game with back-to-back goals coming off a free position shot and an unassisted drive to the goal. Tallies from Kristy Dirks and Katie Laschinger and two from Waagbo followed before Denver's Tara Bourdelaise found the back of the net to make the score 6-1 with 9:48 to play in the first half.
Freshman Jess Adam scored her first career goal and Menser added another off an assist from Caline McHenry to close out the first half, giving the Blue Devils an 8-1 lead.
The Pioneers came out strong in the second stanza, scoring two of the first five goals before Duke went on a 10-0 run to bring the score to 21-3 with 6:10 to play in the game. During that stretch, nine different Duke players scored, including freshman Allie Johnson with her first career tally.
Denver scored the final three goals of the game to bring the score to 21-6.
Duke goalie Meghan Huether had eight saves in 54-plus minutes of action before freshman keeper Regan Bosch came in at the 4:30 mark.
