COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Katie Chrest scored three goals to guide No. 4 Duke past seventh-ranked Maryland, 10-7, Saturday afternoon at the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex. With the win, the Blue Devils sit at 3-0 on the season with a 1-0 mark in the Atlantic Coast Conference, while the Terps start the 2005 season 0-1.
Blue Devil goalie Meghan Huether was stellar between the pipes, earning seven saves and tallying four ground balls in 60 minutes of action, leading Duke to its third victory in four years over the Terrapins.
Duke jumped to a 2-0 lead off scores from Kristy Dirks and Kristen Waagbo before the Terps were able to put a goal on the board. Dirks connected on a pass from Leigh Jester less than a minute into the game and Waagbo followed with an unassisted goal 49 seconds later.
After a Brooke Richards goal for Maryland, the Blue Devils went on a 5-0 run to bring the score to 7-1 at the half. Waagbo and Jester scored on free position shots and Chrest, Stefanie Sparks and Rachel Sanford each put on in the pack of the net during that stretch.
The Terps retaliated in the second half, scoring five straight goals of their own to bring the game to within one at 6-5 with 21:38 to play. Jester tallied her second assist of the day on a pass to Chrest to put the Devils up 7-5.
After nearly 10 minutes of scoreless play for both sides, Jessica Adam connected on a pass from Sparks and, after another goal from the Terps, Chrest sealed the deal with an unassisted goal with 17 second remaining to give the Blue Devils the 10-7 win over head coach Kerstin Kimel's alma mater.
Duke returns to action Saturday, March 4 against William & Mary at 3 p.m. in Koskinen Stadium.
