Junior Jake Grodzinsky and senior Ryan Blaum fired one-under 71s in the second round of the Carpet Capital Classic as Duke dropped one spot to fourth place in the event. The Blue Devils followed yesterday's even-par 288 with a 290 (+2) on Saturday.
Duke was poised to challenge for the top spot heading into the final round but faltered over the final two holes, finishing +9 as a team on No. 17 and No. 18. Georgia fired a four-under 284 to move into a first place tie with Georgia State (+1, 289), while Florida slipped to third after shooting a 294 (+6). The Blue Devils enter tomorrow's final round five shots back of Georgia and Georgia State and two shots behind Florida.
Grodzinsky played bogey free golf for 16 holes before finishing bogey, bogey to close his round at 71. The Cornville, Ariz., native is currently in eighth place with a two-day total of 141 (-3). Freshman Clark Klaasen continued his impressive play, but also closed with a pair of bogeys to shoot a second round 72. Klaasen fired a team-best 68 in the opening round and is tied for sixth at four-under (68-72=140).
Georgia's Chris Kirk holds the individual lead at seven-under, while Georgia State's Mark Haastrup and Joel Sjoholm are each one shot back. Andrew Dresser (Texas Tech) and Kevin Larsen (Georgia Tech) are both two shots back at five-under.
Blaum rebounded nicely from an opening round 75 to post his sixth under-par round of the season with a 71. The 2005 ACC Player of the Year had his round at three-under before bogeying No. 15 and No. 17. Blaum is tied for 33rd with a two-day total of 146.
Nathan Smith was having a solid round on Saturday, but a triple-bogey, 7, on the closing hole dropped him to +4 for the day. After the first two rounds he is tied for 38th. Sophomore Michael Schachner was at +1 heading into the 14th hole but went five-over the rest of the way to finish with a 78.
In Sunday's final round, Duke will be paired with Texas Tech (+3) and Georgia Tech (+4) with threesomes hitting the course beginning at 10:15 on the front side of the Farm Golf Club. Live scoring updates for the final round can be found at www.golfstat.com.
