Freshman Clark Klaasen posted a four-under 68 in the opening round of the Carpet Capital Classic to propel Duke into third place with a team score of 288 (even par). Klaasen registered five birdies to card a 31 on the back nine and junior Jake Grodzinsky continued his strong play this fall with a two-under 70.
Florida leads the tournament after one round at six-under, while Georgia State is two shots back. Duke, Georgia (+1) and Texas Tech (+4) round out the top five. Georgia's Chris Kirk has the best round of the day with a five-under 67.
Klaasen along with David May (Clemson) and James Vargas (Florida) are tied for second overall. Grodzinsky and four others closed the day tied for seventh overall. Senior Nathan Smith birdied the final hole on Friday to post a 73 (+1). The Santa Cruz, Calif., native is currently tied for 19th.
With Klaasen registering the best day of his young career and Grodzinsky carding his seventh under par round, senior Ryan Blaum and sophomore Michael Schachner struggled at the Farm Golf Club. Blaum suffered double-bogeys on both No. 17 and No. 18 to slip to five-over in the first round. Schachner got off to a slow start with a 43 on his opening round before shooting even par over the final nine holes.
Duke begins second round action on the front nine at the Farm Golf Club at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday. The Blue Devils will be paired with Florida and Georgia State. Live stats of the second round and Sunday's final round can be found at www.golfstat.com.
