COLLEGE PARK, MD. ? The third-seeded Duke field hockey team earned a dominant win in the first round of the ACC Tournament Thursday, defeating sixth-seeded Virginia for the second time in five days, 5-1. Five Blue Devils tallied points to record Duke's 10th win in 11 games and improve its record to 15-3. The Blue Devils will face second seeded Maryland Friday at 7 p.m. in the semifinal game.
Freshman Marian Dickinson was the first to get on the board 14:26 into the first half. Freshman Laura Suchoski smoothly carried the ball up the field through several defenders into the circle, where she passed it to Dickinson on the left side of the goal. A swift hit from Dickinson put the ball in the back of the net.
Junior Cara-Lynn Lopresti netted her third goal of the season less than seven minutes later to up the Duke score to 2-0. The Blue Devils controlled the offense, outshooting Virginia 16-2 in the first half, and holding the Cavaliers to zero shots until the 23rd minute of play.
Julie Tromp became the third freshman to earn points 11:29 into the second half when she converted a penalty corner to give Duke a 3-0 advantage with senior Katie Grant and junior Cara-Lynn Lopresti assisting. The trio executed the same play again with 12:30 to go in the game to make it 4-0.
Senior Katie Grant, the 2005 ACC Offensive Player of the Year, made it an even 5-0 four minutes later, turning a pass from sophomore Marcy Burns into her 19th goal of the season. Virginia scored its lone goal in the last minute of the game. Duke senior Christy Morgan came out of the goal to stop a ball, and Virginia's Lindsay O'Bannon managed to strike the ball into the goal.
Morgan picked up the win after playing the whole game in goal. Duke led 23-5 in shots and 12-3 in corners. Virginia's goalie picked up 10 saves on the Blue Devils' 23 shots.
Grant's pair of assist in the game bring her career total to 59, four shy of the No. 1 mark on Duke's all-time list. Grant holds the school record for career points with 209.
Duke returns to action Friday at 7 p.m. to take on Maryland in the tournament semifinal game at Maryland's Field Hockey and Lacrosse Complex.
