COLLEGE PARK, MD. ? The third seeded Blue Devils fell, 4-3, in an intensely fought contest with second seeded Maryland in the ACC Tournament semifinal Friday evening at the University of Maryland. Senior Katie Grant scored two goals and had her hand in another in a game that saw the score tied three times and the lead change twice. Maryland and top seeded Wake Forest will compete in the final game Sunday at noon.
Maryland's Paula Infante scored just under the nine-minute mark to give the Terps the early lead. After carrying the ball up the field, Infante handed off to Sarah Scholl, who then passed back to Infante in the circle. A quick hit laid the ball against the boards in the goal.
Grant knotted the score in the 18th minute of play. Finding herself open in the circle, Grant nailed a slap shot into the left side of the goal for her 20th goal this season.
Five minutes later on the other side of the field, Maryland earned a corner, but Duke's Christy Morgan made a key stop on Infante's hit. Jackie Ciconte, however, came up with the rebound and scored at 23:19 to make it 2-1 in Maryland's favor.
Not to be outdone, the Blue Devils quickly moved the ball down the field, and Grant again matched the score within 20 seconds of Ciconte's goal with an unassisted hit.
Scoring opporunities would not come so easily in the second half. The score remained 2-2 until 11:15 into the second period, when senior Nicole Dudek converted a direct corner opportunity to give Duke its first lead of the game. Grant and freshman Marian Dickinson assisted on the play.
The game would be tied a third time, however, as the Terps drew a corner with less than seven minutes in the game. Emily Beach faked a shot and passed to Susie Rowe, whose successful shot evened the score at 3-3. Rowe again made it on the boards with under two minutes to go, nailing a ball into the top of the net from mid-circle.
Maryland led 14-8 in shots, and both teams took three corners apiece. Morgan played the whole game in goal, making five saves. Grant's assist on Dudek's corner brought her career total to an even 60, just under the Duke assist record of 63.
Duke is now 15-4 in the 2005 campaign heading into the NCAA Tournament, whose first and second rounds will be held Nov. 12-13. Selections will be announced Tuesday at 8 p.m.
