
Duke Defeats Miami, 3-1, For Eighth Straight Victory

CORAL GABLES, Fla. ? The Duke volleyball team closed out the 2005 regular season with their eighth straight ACC victory, defeating Miami, 3-1 (30-19, 30-18, 22-30, 30-25), on Friday afternoon at the Knights Sports Complex. The Blue Devils improve to 23-7 overall and 17-5 in the ACC while Miami falls to 16-14 overall and 11-11 in the conference.
Duke's eighth straight win is their 12th victory in the last 13 matches. The Blue Devils went an ACC-best 10-1 over the second half of the conference schedule to finish with a school-record 17 ACC victories.
Duke opened the match with an 11-5 run on their way to a 30-19 game one victory. With game two tied at 13-13, the Blue Devils used a 17-5 run to take the second frame, 30-18.
After dropping game three, 30-22, Duke opened the fourth frame on an 8-0 run. Miami battled back to make it a two-point game at 26-24 before the Blue Devils closed out the match with a 30-25 win.
Sophomore Carrie DeMange led the Duke offense with a match-high 20 kills in the victory. Junior Tealle Hunkus recorded her 15th double-double of the season, posting 10 kills and 12 digs, while sophomore Ali Hausfeld registered her 15th double-double of the year, pacing the Blue Devils with a match-high 49 assists and 10 digs. Senior Sarah Salem added her fifth double-double of the season, posting 10 kills and 11 digs.
Freshman Jourdan Norman recorded 13 kills and senior Samantha Fisher added nine kills for Duke. The Blue Devil defense was anchored by sophomore Jenny Shull, who had a match-high 23 digs against the Hurricanes.
“I felt that our team played more consistently during the second half of the ACC schedule,” stated Duke Head Coach Jolene Nagel. “That is what allowed us to be as successful as we were in the second half of the season. We've continued to work on little things which have made us a better team. I'm really excited about how the team pulled together and supported one another throughout the year.”
