Head Coach John Rennie
Opening statement:
“Obviously, we're very happy with the results, very proud of our players. We knew that we would have to score goals here. I told one of my assistant coaches before the game ?We're going to have to score three goals to win because Maryland's not going to get shut out.' We were ahead 2-0 at halftime and pretty much expected that they would come out and push everybody forward and that they were capable of scoring goals but they'd be vulnerable to counterattacks and that's pretty much the way the second half ended. They got two on pressure, just overwhelming, throwing everybody forward, but we were able to score going the other way because they didn't have all the numbers back that they usually did. But they're a great team, they're not going to go down easy and it certainly wasn't easy out there tonight. It was just a lot of great effort on our part, a lot of tremendous hard work, and I'm very, very proud of thee guys.”
On Blake Camp's two goals:
“Restarts, free kicks are all about execution. They were defended the way they should have been defended and it was just perfect execution on the part of Blake and a great throw as well. So it was just perfect execution against a defense that was exactly where it should have been. They knew what we were doing. There aren't any secrets. It's just a matter of execution.”
On the Maryland rivalry:
“I think we had gone a stretch there prior to [last year's win] where we had lost quite a few games to Maryland, but those things kind of even themselves out over time. It's a great rivalry and our players respond very well in big games. You can't get any bigger than playing the No. 1 team in the country and the top seed in the tournament. That gave us, I think, a little extra energy. It was kind of an ideal set up, really, to play the No. 1 team and to beat them. We've been on the other end of that a few times as a No. 1 team and it's very, very hard to get your team ready for every single game. They're thinking about bigger and better things, going back to the Final Four, and it's very hard. Everybody's out to get you. So that added a little spice to it as well.”
Senior midfielder Blake Camp
On his two goals:
“To be honest, the free kick, I just kind of had a good feeling about it. Mike Videira was standing right there with me and we've been alternating taking those and I just asked him to let me have that one. I hit it pretty well, luckily it went in. Throw-ins, it seemed like me and Darrius [Barnes], in particular, just kind of figured out early on that it was really working against them. We got a couple of opportunities and luckily I was able to put one of them away.”
On the senior class getting its first two ACC Tournament victories:
“I think we're making up for lost time. That's really the way it feels. I spoke about my class, but it came to my attention also that the same is true for the juniors and sophomores also, they haven't won a game. And I think that everybody going into this game in particular really, really wanted to win. We want to keep winning and we want the season to continue as long as possible.”
On the key to Duke's win:
“I think Maryland is a team that comes out strong to start each half and I think we were able to counter that. Because they threw so many people forward, we were able to get behind. I think that was a big part of the reason we were able to capitalize on our opportunities.”
Junior midfielder Chris Loftus
On the team getting its first ACC Tournament wins since 2000:
“We had a team meeting and Blake was like, ?Umm ... I feel like we need to win something in the ACC Tournament.' I don't if that was quoted exactly, but it was something along those lines. Everybody's happy to get that win for the seniors, and like he said, the juniors and sophomores, this is our first two wins in the ACC Tournament. Everybody's pleased with it, but we're not satisfied. We still have one more game on Sunday.”
