CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA. ? The No. 2 Duke field hockey team wrapped up its regular season schedule Sunday with a 4-0 victory over Virginia on the road, maintaining an undefeated away streak and winning its sixth shutout this year and third in the last four games. With the win, the Blue Devils improve to 14-3 overall and 3-2 in the Atlantic Coast Conference.
“I thought we had a very strong second-half performance,” said head coach Beth Bozman. “We seemed a little lackadaisical in the first half, but the team rallied together at halftime and came back out strong.”
Duke opened the scoring in the fifth minute in familiar fashion as Nicole Dudek took a pass from Katie Grant, eluded the defense, and scored. The pair of seniors were the top scoring duo in the NCAA last year with a combined 119 points. Despite Grant missing four games in 2005 while playing for the USA in the Junior World Cup in September, Dudek and Grant are once again the leading scorers on the team and have so far combined for 32 goals, 18 assists and 82 points.
The Blue Devils went into halftime with a 1-0 lead, but stepped up the offense in the second period with three different players scoring goals. Junior Hilary Linton made it 2-0 a minute into the second half as she swept a loose ball to the boards at 36:03, scoring her first goal of the season.
Six minutes later freshman Ashley Pultorak tipped in a shot by junior Cara-Lynn Lopresti after Lopresti attacked down the left side and entered the circle along the endline. With time winding down in the game, sophomore Rachel Link brought the ball up the left side and laid a ball up to Grant, who scored at 62:30 for the final goal of the game. Grant, who ranks third among Division I players in goals per game, has tallied nine goals in the last five contests.
The Duke defense held Virginia to just three shots in the game, and senior Christy Morgan picked up one save in goal. The Blue Devils registered 17 shots and led 5-1 in corner attempts.
Duke can now turn its full attention to the ACC Tournament, held Thursday through Sunday at Maryland. Seedings for the tournament will be announced Monday by the league office.
