Durham, N.C. - No. 4 Duke will play their second nationally televised game of the season on Friday when they head to Chapel Hill for an ACC showdown with No. 8 North Carolina. The game will shown live on Fox Soccer Channel. The Blue Devils have won two straight games. They will be playing their second game in three days after scoring in the final minute to defeat Stony Brook at home, 2-1. In their last conference game, they cruised to a 6-0 win against No. 11 N.C. State in Durham. The Tar Heels are riding a three-game winning streak including a 2-0 win at High Point in their last game and a 1-0 victory in overtime at Wake Forest.
Series History
The Blue Devils hold a slight edge in the overall series with North Carolina, 39-35-7. Duke Head Coach John Rennie is 18-14 all-time against the Tar Heels. The two teams have gone back-and-forth through the years with the Blue Devils winning last year's match 3-2.
Last Year's Meeting
(10/3/04) - Danny Kramer scored the game-winning goal with 1:17 left in regulation to give No. 2 Duke a 3-2 win and improve them to 11-0 on the season. North Carolina took the lead in the 16th minute with an own goal and held on to the lead until midway through the second half. Owoicho Adogwa lifted the Blue Devils with two straight goals off the bench in a seven-minute span to give Duke the lead with just over ten minutes to play. Tim Merritt scored off a corner kick with six minutes left to tie the game at 2-2 but Kramer took a pass from Blake Camp to win the game late. The assist was the second of the contest for Camp.
The Opponent
North Carolina is having a tremendous season with a 12-3-1 record. They began the year with an eight-game unbeaten streak including four straight wins to start the year. They gave up a last second goal to N.C. State and ended up tying the Wolfpack 2-2. They went on to start the year 7-0-1 before losing 2-0 at Virginia. The Tar Heels had a rough stretch in which they went 2-2 after that loss. They beat Elon and Longwood but lost conference matches against Virginia Tech and Maryland. Since their 4-1 loss at Maryland they have won three straight games. North Carolina has recorded nine shutouts in their 16 games this year and have only allowed 13 goals. They are led by goalkeeper Ford Williams who has six of those shutouts, a 0.88 goals against average and a .732 save percentage. Scott Campbell leads the offense with seven goals and four assists. Four of his goals have been game-winners.
Last Time Out
Duke won their second straight game with a 2-1 victory over Stony Brook at home on Wednesday. Blake Camp scored twice in the win, including the game-winner with 57 seconds remaining in regulation. His first goal came on a header off a pass headed over to him from Tomek Charowski. For his second goal Mike Grella found him at the top of the goal box and he sent it in to the right corner of the net. The game was scoreless at halftime. The Blue Devils took the lead three minutes in to the second stanza and Stony Brook came back to tie the game at 1-1 midway through the half.
North Florida Game Canceled
Duke's non-conference match with North Florida, scheduled for Nov. 1, has been cancelled. Due to the hurricanes in Florida, North Florida has been forced to postpone some of their conference games and those games will be made up next week. They have two regular season games remaining. They play at North Carolina on Friday and then host Clemson on Nov. 5. The ACC Championships will be Nov. 9-13.
Duke vs. Ranked Teams
With the 6-0 win over N.C. State last Friday, Duke improved to 3-3 against ranked teams this season, including a 2-2 record against ranked ACC squads. They went on the road and defeated No. 25 Saint Louis University, 3-1, in their second game of the year. They suffered a 4-1 loss at home against No. 7 St. John's on Sept. 11 but came back the next week to defeat No. 13 Wake Forest, 3-2 in overtime. They went on to lose two straight against ranked teams with a setback on national television to Maryland, 3-1, and a 1-0 loss at Virginia. The Blue Devils bounced back from the Virginia loss with the 6-0 win against N.C. State. The next ranked opponent will be No. 8 North Carolina on Friday. The game will be televised nationally on the Fox Soccer Channel at 8 p.m.
Scoring Offense
Duke entered the week ranked seventh in the nation in scoring offense at 2.62 goals per game. After scoring two goals on Wednesday against Stony Brook they are now averaging 2.57 per contest and have scored at least two goals in 11 of their 14 games. The three times they have failed to score twice was in a 4-1 loss to St. John's, in their 3-1 loss to Maryland and in a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Virginia. They have scored three goals against Saint Louis, the College of Charleston, Wake Forest, Longwood and Boston College. They also tallied five in a win over Temple and a season-high six last Friday against N.C. State. The shutout loss to Virginia was the only time this season Duke failed to score a goal in a game.
Pair of Goals
Blake Camp tallied both of Duke's goals on Wednesday. It was the second time this season that Camp has scored twice in a game. It was also the second straight game the Blue Devils had a player find the back of the net twice. Danny Kramer scored two goals in Duke's 6-0 win against N.C. State last Friday. Duke has had a player score two goals in four different games this season. Chris Loftus scored a pair against Longwood and Camp had two against Temple.
Balanced Attack
Duke has had several different players step up and contribute on offense this season. They have nine different players who have scored goals with seven of those scoring at least three times this season. They also have 15 different players who have recorded assists on goals with 14 of those tallying two or more on the year. Seven different players have recorded double digit points. Chris Loftus leads the way with 21, Blake Camp has 19, Spencer Wadsworth sits at 16, Mike Grella has tallied 15, Michael Videira has put up 14 while Danny Kramer and Zach Pope sit at 10 points.
Shutouts
The Blue Devils recorded their fifth shutout of the season when they blew out N.C. State, 6-0, at home last Friday. Justin Papadakis recorded his fourth shutout of the year with one save in the contest and fifth of his career.
NCAA Leaders as of 10/24
Michael Videira and Spencer Wadsworth are both ranked among the top-20 in the country in assists per game. Videira is ranked tenth with an average of 0.62 per contest and Wadsworth is 15th, averaging 0.58 per contest. As a team Duke is ranked seventh in the nation in scoring offense, averaging 2.62 goals per game and 19th in win percentage (.731).
ACC Leaders as of 10/24
Duke leads the ACC in several statistical categories. They are first with 16.69 shots per game, 9.46 points per game, and 4.23 assists per game. They also have several individuals among the leaders in the conference. Blake Camp is seventh in shots per game (2.77) and tenth in goals per game (0.38). Michael Videira is tied for ninth with 2.62 shots per game and is third with 0.62 assists per game. Chris Loftus is tied for ninth with 2.62 shots per game, tied for third with 1.62 points per game and fifth with 0.69 goals per game. Spencer Wadsworth is eighth with 1.25 points per contest and is fifth with 0.58 assists per game. He is also tied for fifth with three game-winning goals. Mike Grella is tenth with 1.17 points per game and seventh with 0.50 assists per contest. Justin Papadakis is tied for fifth with four shutouts.
National Rankings
Duke jumped from No. 16 to No. 4 this week in the NSCAA/adidas Top-25. They moved up five spots to No. 5 in the soccertimes.com Top-25 poll and four slots to No. 6 in the Soccer America Top-25. They are also ranked seventh by College Soccer News and third by Top Drawer Soccer.
ACC in the National Rankings
The ACC currently has seven teams ranked in the Soccer America Top-25. All nine teams in the conference have been ranked in the Top-25 at some point this season. The only team in the conference that does not have a winning record is Boston College who is 4-6-2 on the year. Virginia, Maryland, Duke and North Carolina have all appeared in the top-five this season as well.
Dominance in First Half
The Blue Devils have been the first team to put a goal on the board in ten of their 13 games this season. So far this year, the Blue Devils have outscored their opponents 20-1 in the first half. The only goal they have allowed in the first half came against Wake Forest. Duke also holds a 113-40 advantage in total shots in the opening stanza. However, in the second half they have been outscored 16-14 despite holding an advantage in total shots, 112-87.
