DURHAM, N.C. -- Duke head coach Mike Krzyzewski announced that senior forward Lee Melchionni was named a team captain for the 2005-06 season. Melchionni will join three other members of this senior class ? Sean Dockery, J.J. Redick and Shelden Williams ? as captains. This marks the first time in Duke basketball history the team has had four captains.
“Lee is very deserving of this honor,” said Krzyzewski. “He shows up every day with a good attitude and has developed into one of our strongest leaders. Lee has earned this by giving our program everything he has on a consistent basis throughout his Duke career.”
Melchionni has seen action in 81 career games, including 14 starting assignments. He is coming off a junior season in which he averaged 7.7 points and 3.4 rebounds per game. The Lancaster, Pa., native shot .406 overall from the field (80-of-197) and .396 from three-point range (57-of-144) last season.
Melchionni's father, Gary, also served as a Duke basketball captain in 1972 and 1973.
