Foxboro, Mass. - Jay Heaps, a former National Player of the Year at Duke, was named to the U.S. National Team roster for their World Cup Qualifying match against Panama on Wednesday. The U.S. won the match at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro, Mass., 2-0, to win their first ever CONCACAF Hexagonal with a 7-2-1 record.
Heaps, a current member of the New England Revolution in the MLS, was one of six Revolution players on the squad for Wednesday's match. His teammate Taylor Twellman scored in the 57th minute to put the U.S. up 2-0 in the game. Heaps did not see any action in the game.
A two-time All-America at Duke, Heaps was awarded the Missouri Athletic Club Award in his senior season as the top American collegiate soccer player. He scored 13 goals and had eight assists in 1998 to garner national recognition. He finished his college career third in Duke history with 45 goals, fourth with 37 assists and second with 127 points. Heaps also was a walk-on for the Duke basketball team. He was selected with the No. 2 overall pick in the 1999 MLS Draft by Miami and was named MLS Rookie of the Year in his first season.
The U.S. National team qualified for the 2006 FIFA World Cup on Sept. 3 with a 2-0 victory against Mexico. They will play their group matches on Dec. 9 in Leipzig, Germany at the FIFA World Cup Draw. The men's national team has chosen Hamburg, Germany as their training site for the World Cup which will be staged at 12 different venues in Germany from June 9 to July 9 in 2006.
