NEWTON, MASS. ? Playing with a full roster for the first time since Sept. 10, the No. 4 Duke field hockey team returned to dominating fashion Saturday with five different players scoring in a 6-1 victory over No. 16 Boston College on the road. The Blue Devils improve to 8-2 on the season after picking up their second Atlantic Coast Conference win, while Boston College drops to 6-3 overall and 1-2 in the ACC.
“Everyone who played in the World Cup came back better players and had experience winning tough games,” said head coach Beth Bozman. “And the team that was left behind became better players and won some tough games as well. Our ambition was to join those two forces, and that's exactly what we did.”
Senior Katie Grant opened the scoring in her first Duke game after returning from a two-week stint at the Junior World Cup in Santiago, Chile, with an unassisted goal 15 minutes into the game. Junior Amy Stopford, who played with Grant in the World Cup, converted a penalty stroke two minutes later to up the score to 2-0. Sophomore Marcy Burns gave the Blue Devils a 3-0 halftime advantage by netting an unassisted shot with just over two and a half minutes left in the half.
Duke charged back out after halftime in complete control of the game. Senior Nicole Dudek scored back-to-back goals -- her eighth and ninth of the season -- in the first 15 minutes to bring the score to 5-0, and junior Cara-Lynn Lopresti nailed an unassisted shot with 21 minutes left to finish the Duke scoring. Lopresti, who also just returned from World Cup play scored her first Duke goal of the season.
“I thought Cara had a really impressive day,” said Bozman, “but then when you look at our scoring spread, we had a lot of impressive players. We just had two really good halves and played some top-level hockey today.”
Crystal Frates scored the lone goal for Boston College on a pass from Tara Fernandes with eight minutes remaining.
The Blue Devils dominated in shot opportunities, outshooting their opponent 22-8, and edged the Eagles 7-5 in penalty corners. Senior Christy Morgan played the entire game in goal for Duke, recording four saves.
The Blue Devils head to Harvard Sunday to take on the Crimson at 1 p.m. in their fourth straight road game.
