Blue Devils & Rams Battle To 2-2 Tie In Men's Soccer Exhibition

DURHAM, N.C. - The Duke University men's soccer team garnered two second half goals by freshmen to post a 2-2 tie against 13th-ranked Virginia Commonwealth on Sunday night at Koskinen Stadium in Durham, N.C. Virginia Commonwealth got on the board just 34 seconds into the contest as Hugh MacDonald took a bad clear by the Blue Devils and beat Duke goalkeeper Justin Trowbridge to give the Rams a 1-0 advantage. In the next 75 minutes of action, both defenses held each other scoreless until the 76:00 mark of the second half. Duke freshman Spencer Wadsworth was taken down by a Ram defender in the box to allow the Blue Devils a penalty kick. Freshman Tomek Charowski took the kick and hit the left corner of the net, beating Virginia Commonwealth goalkeeper, Rob Szymanik. Less than eight minutes later, Wadsworth found a streaking freshman, Paul Dudley, who connected on his first collegiate goal at the 83:06 mark, which gave Duke a 2-1 lead. Three fouls by the Blue Devils over the final five minutes of the game gave the Rams three scoring opportunities and were able to connect on their final attempt as Evan Morris found Veit Schaidinger to even the score with 30 seconds remaining in the contest. Duke won the shooting duel as the Blue Devils outshot the Rams, 10-9. In goal for the Blue Devils, Trowbridge allowed one goal and had one save, while freshman Justin Papadakis allowed one goal and had three saves. The Blue Devils will next host Connecticut on Friday, Aug. 27 at 7:00 p.m., before opening the regular season on Sept. 1 against Emory & Henry at 7:00 p.m. - d - u - k - e -
