Duke Rowing head coach Robyn Horner is pleased to announce the addition of six athletes to the Blue Devil Class of 2008. Katie Bull (Scottsdale, Ariz./Scottsdale Christian Academy), Gwen Coleman (Bollingbrook, Ill. /Choate Rosemary Hall), Emily Herrington (Cambridge, N.Y./Emma Willard), Kate Kearney (Bronxville, N.Y./Bronxville), Elizabeth MacLeod (Wolfeboro, N.H./Noble & Greenough) and Beth Treseder (Bethesda, MD/Walt Whitman) committed to Duke in the early signing period last semester.
"This year's squad is very talented and athletic in the freshmen and sophomore classes. We are expecting that our varsity eight will be very young," said Horner. "Our goal is to bring in a strong recruiting class to group with our existing freshmen and sophomores. This early decision admit to the class of 04-05 is the beginning of an incredibly strong class."
Bull began rowing for Tempe Junior Crew in the summer of 2002. Tempe Juniors is one of the founding rowing programs in the Arizona desert. In 2003, TJC made it's east coast debut at the prestigious Head of the Charles with Bull in stroke seat of the Youth 4+ entry. She also plays basketball for Scottsdale Christian.
Coleman is a four-year rower and team captain at Choate, a member of the highly competitive NEIRA league. She rowed 3-seat in the Choate Youth 4+ at the 2003 Head of the Charles. She is also captain of the successful Choate ice hockey team.
Herrington is a member of the varsity team at Emma Willard and also rows for Saratoga Rowing Association. She attended USRowing's 2003 Jr. National Team Development Camp and was in the gold-medal winning crew at the USRowing Championships. She went on to be a part of the CanAmMex team, finishing 1st in 8+ and 2nd in 2-. Herrington also competed for SRA at the Canadian Henley, finishing 3rd in the Jr. 8+.
Kearney sculls for NYAC during the summers, competing in the 4x and 2x at USRowing Nationals. She is also a cross country and middle-distance runner and is a member of the nationally ranked 4x800m relay team at Bronxville.
MacLeod began rowing last spring at Nobles and continued this summer and fall with Community Rowing, Inc in Boston. She was a member of the CRI Youth 8+ that claimed second place overall and was the top junior program at the 2003 Head of the Charles Regatta. She also plays goalie for the Nobles ice hockey team.
Treseder is a force on the club rowing circuit at Thompson Boat Center. She stroked the TBC 8+ that finished 4th at USRowing Nationals in 2003 and 2nd at the Canadian Henley Regatta. Treseder continued with TBC this fall, finishing 12th in the Youth 8+ at the Head of the Charles (under Water Street Rowing). She is also a member of the Varsity 8+ at Whitman.
"All six of these athletes are physically strong, have an intense work ethic and will be great leaders for our team," said Horner. " I am looking forward to them joining us next fall. I know they will all make an immediate contribution to our success as a program."
