With the IC4A/ECAC Championships looming on the horizon, the Duke men's and women's indoor track and field teams competed in two different meets this weekend-the NYU Fastrack Invitaional and the UNC Last Chance meet-in order to secure qualifying marks for the championship season.
The weekend began Friday evening at the NYU Fastrack Invitational, held at the Armory Track in New York, N.Y. The men's distance medley relay team of Jon Amt, Dan King, Steve Craig and Nick Scheider, placed second in an NCAA provisional time of 9:42.88, breaking the school record set just a few weeks ago at the Armory. Senior Casey Reardon brought home a second-place finish in the men's 800 meter run, recording his first IC4A qualifying time of the season in the event.
Saturday's action took place in nearby Chapel Hill where a handful of Duke athletes competed at the UNC Last Chance meet at the Eddie Smith Field House. Among those recording their top marks of the season were miler Ian Cronin, who posted an IC4A qualifying time of 4:13.99 to place second in the event, and freshman Jon Fox, who cut nearly 30 seconds off his personal record at 5000 meters, clocking in at 15:15.33. In addition, senior Kristie Howard tied a career-high in the women's pole vault, clearing a height of 11-7.75.
The women's distance medley relay team notched an NCAA provisional mark of 11:21.11, as it placed second. Freshman Debra Vento took first place in the high jump with a height of 5-9.75, while fellow rookie Beth Maher placed second in the shot put with a throw of 42-8.75.
The Blue Devils will compete for All-East honors next weekend, when they head to Boston, Mass., for the IC4A/ECAC Championships March 6-7.
