The Duke University men's fencing team opened the 2004 season up with a 3-2 showing in State College, Pa. on Saturday. In women's action, the Blue Devils compiled a 2-3 ledger in their first action of the year.
On the men's side, Duke fell to Penn State 19-8 in its opening meet. The Blue Devils followed up with a 15-12 victory against Pennsylvania as the epee team went 7-2 and the saber team finished 6-3 to lead the way. In its next dual meet, Duke fell to St. John's 17-10, despite a 6-3 record in the epee.
The Blue Devils responded with a 20-7 victory against Haverford as the foil team posted an 8-1 mark, while the epee team went 7-2. Duke came up victorious in its final meet, topping North Carolina, 16-11. Again the epee was a strength for the Blue Devils, as Sam Doran, Nic Testerman and Nathan Bragg combined to win seven of their nine bouts.
The women's fencing team dropped its first three matches, losing to Penn State (22-5), Pennsylvania (20-7) and St. John's (15-12). Against the Red Storm, the Blue Devil epee squad won seven of the nine bouts.
Duke secured its first victory against Hunter College, 20-7. The epee team registered a clean sweep (9-0), while the saber team was 7-2. The Blue Devils also went on to top North Carolina, 18-9, in its their final meet of the day. Again the epee team guided the way with an 8-1 record.
