DURHAM, N.C. - Duke University senior goalkeeper Thora Helgadottir was named ACC Co-Player of the Week on Monday after leading the 12th-ranked Blue Devil women's soccer team to two victories over N.C. State and fourth-ranked Virginia last week. Also receiving the honor this week was North Carolina's Alyssa Ramsey.
Helgadottir, a native of Kopavogur, Iceland, allowed no goals through 165.13 minutes of action in the net for the Blue Devils against the Wolfpack and Cavaliers. In Duke's 3-1 victory over N.C. State, Helgadottir played in 75.13 minutes without allowing a goal, while registering three saves.
In the 1-0 upset victory over Virginia, Helgadottir collected her second shutout of the season as she recorded two saves on four shots faced. One of the saves came at the end of the first half as she stopped Virginia's Ariel Thompson, who had a one-on-one breakaway against Helgadottir.
The shutout against the Cavaliers marks the 15th of her career and she now ranks second on Duke's all-time shutout list behind Melissa Carr (34). Over 10 starts this season, Helgadottir has a 1.28 goals against average.
It marks the second time this season a Duke women's soccer player has been named ACC Player of the Week as sophomore Carolyn Riggs earned the honor on Sept. 1.
The Blue Devils will next travel to Clemson, S.C. for a 7:00 p.m. contest on Friday, Oct. 24 against the Clemson Tigers.
