Charlotte, N.C. - Duke's 18th-ranked men's team finished in sixth place and the 8th-ranked women's cross country team finished in 12th place on Friday night in the Great American University Championship Race at the Great American Cross Coutnry Festival in Charlotte, N.C.
The women were running against Brigham Young University, the defending NCAA Women's Champions, and freshman Caroline Bierbaum placed fourth in the 5,000 meter race (18:11) with 162 finishers. Coming in second for the Blue Devils was sophomore Paige Miller (19:43) in 57th place overall, while Laura Stanley finished third for Duke and 81st overall (20:00). Heidi Hullinger and Elizabeth Wort finished 98th (20:16) and 99th (20:19), respectively.
The Duke men's team finished behind five nationally ranked teams, including three top 10 teams. The Blue Devils were led by sophomore Micahel Hatch who finished first (26:56) for Duke and 13th overall in a race that featured 168 finishers. The 8,000 meter race featured six ACC schools including the Bue Devils, and Hatch finished third among the ACC competitors.
Chris Williams finished second for Duke (27:16) and 28th overall. Jared Moore finished in 36th place (27:26), Ian Cronin 47th (27:40) and Morgan Clark 71st (28:01) to round out Duke's top five finishers.
Duke's men's "B" team placed second in the Great American College "B" Team Race. Neal D'Amato was Duke's top finisher and 8th place overall (28:06) in a race that featured 102 finishers.
Duke's women's cross country team is running split squads this weekend, with the other squad traveling to Palo Alto, Calif. to participate in the Stanford Invitational Saturday. Duke's next cross country meet is on October 12 at the North Carolina Intercollegiate in Greenville, N.C.
