Duke has been rated No. 21 in the Soccer America preseason poll. The Blue Devils will face some of the best teams in the country this season, including eight teams ranked in Soccer America's preseason poll. Duke opens the season on Friday against No. 15 Tennessee and travels to No. 5 Texas on Sunday. On Sept. 6 the Blue Devils face their third opponent, No. 12 Washington.
North Carolina, runner-up last season in NCAA Division I women's soccer, is ranked No. 1 in Soccer America's Preseason College Women's Top 25.
The Tar Heels, who have won 17 of 21 national championships, return eight starters from a team that went 24-1 and adds the nation's No. 1 recruiting class.
West Coast Conference rivals Portland and Santa Clara, the defending NCAA champion, follow Carolina at Nos. 2 and 3. The Pilots, a semifinalist in 2001, return their four most important players: sophomore forward Christine Sinclair, who has scored 10 goals in four games for Canada at the ongoing FIFA U-19 Women's World Championship, and midfielders Betsy Barr and Erin Misaki and defender Lauren Orlandos, all seniors.
The Broncos, who topped North Carolina, 1-0, in the title game, returns four starters, including Soccer America Player of the Year Aly Wagner, but they must make up for the loss to graduation of All-American central defenders Danielle Slaton and Anna Kraus, who are playing in the WUSA.
Virginia, with a strong group of returning underclassmen, is ranked fourth. No. 5 is Texas, which returns all 11 starters, including U.S. U-19 standout Kelly Wilson, who has scored seven goals at the world championships.
Penn State, Stanford, Notre Dame, UCLA and Texas A&M make up the remainder of the Top 10.
The ACC and Pacific-10 Conference each contributed five teams to the Top 25, with the West Coast Conference and Big East represented by four apiece.
The Women's College Cup will be played Dec. 6 and 8 in Austin, Texas.
