ATLANTA, GA. - The No. 9 ranked Duke University women's tennis team captured their 13th straight ACC Championship on Sunday by knocking off No. 3 Wake Forest 5-3 at the Racket Club of the South.
The match began with Wake Forest taking the early lead with Janet Bergman defeating Katie Granson 6-4, 6-2 at No. 3 singles, but Duke came back with a victory at No. 6 singles by Prim Siripipat over Annemarie Milton (6-3, 6-3).
Wake Forest next won two straight with No. 19 ranked Bea Bielik knocking off No. 32 Kathy Sell (2-6, 6-3, 6-1) at No. 2 and No. 85 ranked Jackie Houston defeating Hillary Adams (7-6, 6-4) at No. 5 to put the Demon Deacons up 3-1. The Blue Devils then got a huge win at the No. 1 singles spot by junior Megan Miller (ranked No. 14) over No. 5 ranked Adria Engel (6-4, 4-6, 6-2). Earlier this season Engel knocked off Miller 6-0, 6-2 in Durham.
Sophomore Erica Biro of Duke won the final singles match at the No. 4 slot with a 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 win over Maren Haus.
Going into doubles play the score was all square 3-3 and Duke needing to win only two doubles matches to bring home the title. The Blue Devils got started quickly as the duo of Sell/Granson defeated Engel/Houston (8-3) at No. 3. At the No. 2 slot the team of Miller/Adams posted an 8-4 match-clinching victory over Haus/Milton. Duke's Brooke Siebel/Biro were winning 7-5 over Bielik/Bergman, but was stopped after the Blue Devils won at No. 2 singles.
Duke's own Miller was tabbed ACC Tournament Most Valuable Player after going 3-0 in singles play and 1-0 in doubles action on the weekend. She marks the 12th consecutive Blue Devil player to win the honor.
Duke revenged an earlier 6-3 loss to Wake Forest in Durham, N.C., which ended the Blue Devils 116-match overall and 82-match regular season win streak. Duke has won 14 of the last 15 matches heading into NCAA's.

Quoting Head Coach Jamie Ashworth
I am proud of the whole team. Since we lost at home [to Wake Forest] we rededicated ourselves to the last two and a half weeks of the season. It paid off today. In our conditioning program we just made a commitment to work harder.
Looking back on that it was probably a good thing we lost that regular season match [to Wake Forest] because it enabled us to see some of the things we needed to work on and change some things we were doing.
We played well today. I knew we needed to go three all in singles and we did that. Then, all three doubles came out and took out any momentum Wake Forest had right away. They just fed off of each other.
We talked about playing fearless. I thought that was the key especially in doubles as we had no fear at all what was lying ahead.
On Megan Miller's play...
She played well all weekend. She went 3-0 in singles and 1-0 in doubles. She beat two players who are ranked in the top 20 in the country. The girl she beat today[Adria Engel] she basically got killed by last time. She did a good job keeping her composure and staying disciplined with her game.
Quoting Megan Miller
Awesome, it was so awesome. It was the greatest feeling in the whole world. We stole all the marbles back. This was were it counted.
Quoting Megan Miller on the win after WFU breaking our streak
It was so gratifying. It was the most gratifying thing ever today after having them blow our streak in the ACC. Revenge was so sweet.
Quoting Megan Miller on going into NCAA's
We have seen what it takes to rededicated ourselves and fire up and come out there to beat a top five team in the country. We have seen what it has done for all of us preparing for that and know what it takes going into nationals to be able to go out there and play day after day and bring to the court what each of us needs to win. We know what it takes now and we just have to keep the momentum going and really focus on what we have to be prepared for nationals.
