The Duke men were led by 2000 ACC Individual Champion Sean Kelly (Wickliffe, Ohio), who crossed the finish line with a time of 25:00.4. The Blue Devils finished with three runners in the top 10 as senior Terry Brennan (Lake Forest, Ill.) was named All-Conference for the second consecutive season as he placed third with a time of 26:06.3 and senior Brendan Fitzgibbon (San Francisco, Calif.) finished ninth with a time of 25:29.3. Rounding out the Duke lineup was freshman Chris Williams (Lawrence, Ks.), who placed twelfth (25:39.4), and junior Jay Champi (Cumberland, R.I.), who placed 14th (25:45.2).
The Blue Devils were followed by N.C. State who finished second with 49 points. Virginia finished third with 54 points while Wake Forest was fourth with a total of 84 points. North Carolina, Clemson and Florida State finished fifth, sixth, and seventh with scores of 163, 180 and 188 respectively. Georgia Tech and Maryland registered scores of 218 and 232.
"The guys ran really well today," said Duke men's head coach Norm Ogilvie. "Each guy in our top five executed to perfection. We ran a conservative race on a tough course and it payed off in the last mile."
The Duke women were led by sophomore Sheela Agrawal (Swansea, Mass.), who was named to the All-Conference team for the second consecutive season as she placed third with a time of 18:15.5. Rounding out the Duke lineup was senior Megan Sullivan (Wausau, Wis.) who placed 16th (19:07.7), junior Katie Atlas (Johnson, N.Y) placed 21st (19:18.0), junior Maddy Woodmansee (Auburn, N.Y.) placed 30th (19:30.7), while freshman Lisa Nagorny (York, Pa.) placed 36th with a time of 19:35.7.
"We did not run a great race today," said Duke women's coach Jan Ogilvie. "We have to run more like a team. Our freshman ran well, but we were just not there to run from beginning of the race."
The N.C. State women captured its 18th ACC Title with a low score of 43 points. The Wolfpack was followed by North Carolina who finished second with 52 points. Wake Forest finished third (92), followed by Duke, Virginia (107), Florida State (128), Georgia Tech (143), Clemson (253) and Maryland (263). Freshman Shalane Flannigan of North Carolina captured the Individual Championship and Freshman of the Year honors with a time of 17:38.1
The Blue Devils women's and men's cross country teams return to action on Sat., Nov. 11th at the NCAA Southeast Regionals in Greenville, South Carolina.
Duke gains one point in the Carlyle Cup competition.
