DURHAM, N.C. (November 14) -- The 22nd-ranked Duke Blue Devils bowed out of the NCAA Women's College Cup, falling 3-0 to tenth-ranked William & Mary (19-3 overall, 8-0 CAA) in second-round action on Sunday afternoon in Newport News, Va. With the loss, Duke ends its season at 13-10 overall, 2-5 in the ACC.
William and Mary put its first goal on the board at the 21:58 mark of the first period, on an 15-yard unassisted shot from Franny Swajkoski. Although the Blue Devils took seven shots to the Tribe's five in the period, Swajkoski's goal was the only score of the first period.
William and Mary padded their lead early in the second half, scoring two more goals in the first 10 minutes of the final period. Missy Wycinsky, the Colonial Athletic Association's Player of the Year the last two seasons, scored off a feed from Swajkoski at 48:40 mark, taking the pass in the box and connecting with the open net for the score. Jordan Krieger scored the Tribe's final goal in the 55th minute, dribbling it in after taking a pass from Wycinksy.
"This was a difficult match to watch," said Duke head coach Bill Hempen. "It seemed like every time we challenged, it bounced William & Mary's way at crucial areas during the game and on the field."
William & Mary goalkeeper Michelle Horbaly recorded six saves in the shutout, while Duke keeper Isis Dallis registered one save. The Blue Devils outshot the Tribe 15-12, and took seven corner kicks to the Tribe's three.
The Tribe advances to face ACC champion North Carolina, winners over Central Florida in their second-round game, in the NCAA third round on Saturday, Nov. 20 at 7:00 p.m. in Chapel Hill, N.C.
