Jason Widener, one of two Blue Devils to earn All-ACC honors three times in a career, is in his second season as an assistant coach for both Duke's men's and women's golf programs. Widener joined the Duke athletic department after serving as the owner and head teaching professional of the Caddy Shack Driving Range in Durham, N.C.
A native of Greensboro, N.C., Widener enjoyed tremendous success as a junior golfer, garnering North Carolina High School Player of the Year accolades two times. He won the 1988 United States Golf Association Junior Amateur championship in 1988 and was a two-time winner of the Carolinas Junior Amateur Championship.
In addition to being the top-ranked junior golfer in the United States, he earned both All-America and Scholastic All-America honors from the American Junior Golf Association.
Widener graduated from Duke in 1993 with a bachelor of arts degree in political science and philosophy. A four-year letterwinner under head coach Rod Myers, he captured medalist honors at the ACC Championship as a freshman in 1990 and went on to earn All-America honors that season. He would go on to join Chuck Taylor as the only players in Duke men’s golf history to be named All-ACC three times.
During his four years at Duke, Widener helped the Blue Devils to three NCAA Championship appearances in 1990, 1992 and 1993 and competed as an individual in 1991.
Following his playing days at Duke, he turned professional and won the 1994 Bangor Open title before becoming a member of the PGA European Tour in 1996.
Born March 3, 1971, Widener is single and lives in Carrboro, N.C.
