Winston Gandy joined the Duke women’s basketball staff as an assistant coach in July of 2020. He was elevated to associate head coach on July 1, 2022.
Gandy helped coach Shayeann Day-Wilson to one of the best rookie seasons in Blue Devil history that culminated in her earning ACC Freshman of the Year honors - the first Blue Devil to achieve the feat since Elizabeth Williams in 2012. Day-Wilson led Duke, as well as all ACC freshmen, in scoring with 368 points (12.7 ppg), checking in at No. 10 on Duke’s freshman record charts.
Before arriving in Durham, Gandy spent three years on the Rice University women’s basketball staff, helping guide the Owls to three straight 20-win seasons, including one NCAA Tournament appearance and one Conference USA Championship.
Part of one of the best stretches in Rice women’s basketball history, Gandy helped the Owls to a 72-22 overall record and a 42-8 mark in Conference USA action over that three-year period. In 2018-19, the Owls won a school single-season record 28 games that featured an appearance in the NCAA Tournament and the school’s first Conference USA Tournament title.
Prior to his coaching stint at Rice, Gandy spent three years in the NBA - one season as an assistant coach and two years as the coordinator of player development with the Washington Wizards. During his tenure with the Wizards, Gandy worked with a pair of multi-year NBA All-Stars in John Wall (5-time selection) and Bradley Beal (3-time selection), as Washington advanced to the Eastern Conference Semifinals three times.
Gandy also served as the director of recruiting operations at the University of Maryland in 2013-14. In his lone season in College Park, the Terrapins went 28-7 and advanced to the NCAA Final Four. He also coached former Blue Devil All-America selection Lexie Brown at Maryland, before her transfer to Duke.
Gandy graduated from Maryland in 2013 with a degree in economics and volunteered as a scout team player for the Terrapins from 2009-13.
