Tommy Barrineau joined the Duke track and field coaching staff as a volunteer assistant coach in September, 2014.
During his collegiate career at the University of Georgia from 2007-2011, Barrineau was a standout multi-event athlete for the Bulldogs, highlighted by capturing the SEC heptathlon crown during the 2010 indoor campaign. Barrineau twice competed at the national meets, qualifying in the heptathlon for the 2010 NCAA Indoor Championships and punching his ticket in the decathlon for the 2011 NCAA Outdoor Championships. The Burke, Va., product totaled eight all-SEC selections during his time as a Bulldog and claimed the school record in the heptathlon with a score of 5,700. Barrineau graduated from Georgia in 2012 with a degree in health promotion and behavior.
Competing internationally, Barrineau has won a pair of Finnish national titles, winning the 2014 decathlon before capturing gold in the heptathlon in 2015. Barrineau’s father, James Barrineau, was an All-American high jumper for Georgia and went on to compete for the U.S. at the 1976 Summer Olympics.
In addition to working with the Blue Devil coaching staff, Barrineau spent the spring of 2014 as the jumps coach for Durham Academy and works as a personal trainer. Barrineau is a certified strength and conditioning specialist (CSCS) through the NCSA and owns a USATF Level I coaching certificate.
