Jacky Mendes joined the Duke track & field coaching staff as an assistant coach in July of 2020 after three seasons in a similar role at the University of New Hampshire.
In her first season in Durham, Mendes helped guide Duke jumpers to several notable results. Under her guidance, sophomore Elasia Campbell took home ACC medals in the indoor and outdoor season, becoming the ACC Outdoor Champion in the high jump and a bronze medalist indoors. Mendes also assisted in Ezra Mellinger become a two-time All-ACC Second Team honoree in the long jump and Brianna Smith's first All-ACC honor as a freshman in the high jump at the ACC Outdoor Championships.
At New Hampshire, Mendes worked primarily with men's and women's jumps, multi events and sprints. During her time on the Wildcats' staff, Mendes coached student-athletes that set school records in the men's long jump, triple jump and pentathlon. In the 2019 outdoor season, Mendes worked directly with freshman Nate Hobbs, who won a gold medal in the long jump at the America East Championships and IC4A Championships on the way to an NCAA Regional appearance.
Prior to her stint at UNH, Mendes served as the head coach of the Merrimack College men's and women's track & field program for three years. In her second season at Merrimack, she coached the program's first national champion and helped several more student-athletes qualify for the Indoor National Championships in 2016. She also oversaw a women's 4x400m relay squad that garnered Division II Indoor All-America status in two straight seasons.
Mendes' contributions were recognized distinctly in 2017, when she was named the USTFCCCA Division II Indoor Women's Coach of the Year for the East Region.
A 2012 graduate of New Hampshire, Mendes was a four-year letter winner on the women's track & field team while serving as a team captain. Her school record in the pentathlon – 3,485 points – was set in 2011 and still stands to this day.Â
Mendes earned her master's degree in exercise and sports science, with a sport psychology concentration, from Ithaca College in 2015. As a graduate student at Ithaca, she assisted with the track & field program and served as a head event coach in the javelin.
