Skurka had a break through cross country season as a sophomore in 2000, making the trip to Ames, Iowa for the Pre-National Meet and running a personal best for both the 8,000 and 10,000-meter distance last fall. Outdoors, Skurka ran the fastest time for 10,000-meters on the Duke team with a time of 31:46.09, which he ran at the ACC Championships. Skurka placed second in his heat of the 5,000-meters at the Duke Invitational with a 15:01.01 time.
