Mike Jacobs enters his fourth season as an assistant coach with the Duke men’s soccer program. Jacobs has coached at the collegiate or professional level for the past 11 years and was the inaugural winner of the NSCAA/adidas National Assistant Coach of the Year and NSCAA/adidas Atlantic Regional Coach of the Year award in 2004. He has been listed by College Soccer News as one of the "Top Assistant Coaches in the Country" in each of the past three seasons. This past year, he helped guide the Blue Devils to an 18-6 record and their fifth College Cup appearance.
As an assistant coach at Evansville from 2000-01, Jacobs led the Purple Aces against top-ranked SMU in 2001 and 2000 National finalist Creighton.
Prior to the two-year stint at Evansville, Jacobs spent four years (1996-99) as head coach at Iona College, guiding the Gaels to their best three-year record in school history from 1997-99. At the age of 24, Jacobs was the youngest Division I head coach during his first season.
In just his second year at Iona, he was named the 1997 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference and Spalding MAAC Coach of the Year. Jacobs’ tenure at Iona included a 3-1 loss to the Blue Devils in the 1998 adidas Wolfpack Classic. The Gaels held a 1-0 lead in the contest before Duke rallied for the win.
Jacobs’ professional coaching experience includes assisting with the Long Island Rough Riders, where he worked with former Tampa Bay Mutiny and New York/New Jersey head coach Alfonso Mondelo. He also assisted with the North Jersey Imperials of the USISL, where he coached current United States Under-17 National Team Assistant Coach, Tim Mulqueen.
In addition, Jacobs holds a USSF ?A’ license as well as an NSCAA Advanced National diploma. He has served as a member of the NSCAA Division I Great Lakes Regional Rankings Committee and as the chair of the NSCAA Division I New York Regional Rankings Committee.
Jacobs, a member of the United States Soccer Federation National Goalkeeping Staff, has also served as a staff coach for the Region II and Region I Olympic Development Program and the Eastern New York Olympic Development Program. He is the Super Y-League National Team Goalkeeper Coaching Director.
A 1993 graduate of Pace University, Jacobs earned a degree in Literature and Communications with a minor in Secondary Education. A past author of magazine articles in the NSCAA’s Soccer Journal, Jacobs co-authored a chapter in the NSCAA’s Soccer Coaches’ Bible with Coach John Rennie.
Jacobs resides in Raleigh with his wife, Jennifer, and their four children - Katherine (8), Daniel (4), Allison (2) and Amanda (1).
