WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Duke tandem of sophomore Jade Williams and freshman Miela Goodchild combined for 31 points Sunday afternoon in Winston-Salem, N.C., as the Blue Devils downed Wake Forest, 55-44, at Lawrence Joel Memorial Coliseum.
Williams, a native of The Colony, Texas, matched a career high with 17 points to go along with six rebounds, while Goodchild tallied 14 points and three assists in 40 minutes of action.
The Blue Devils (12-14, 4-10 ACC) jumped out to an 8-0 start and the Duke defense clamped down on the Demon Deacons holding them scoreless for the first 4:47 of the contest. Wake Forest missed its first six attempts of the game. The Demon Deacons rallied for a 7-2 run to cut the Duke lead to 10-7, but Goodchild drained her first three-pointer of the day towards the end of the half and Duke led 17-10 at the end of the first.
Freshman Onome Akinbode-James was active on the boards early with four rebounds, while adding two points and a steal, but she was regulated to the bench with two early fouls.
Duke held as large as an eight-point lead in the second quarter, before Wake Forest made another rally. Goodchild, who is from Brisbane, Queensland, Australia, sank her second trey of the game with six seconds remaining to give the Blue Devils a 25-18 lead at the half.
Both teams struggled from the field scoring a combined 16 points in the second quarter and hitting 6-of-23 field goals. Goodchild paced the Blue Devils with eight points, while Williams added six points in the first stanza.
Duke would go ahead by 10, 33-23, at the 6:42 mark of the third period as Goodchild sank her third three-pointer of the afternoon, but the Demon Deacons went on a 7-0 run and the Blue Devils led by only four, 38-34, with 10 minutes remaining.
In the third period, Williams drained her second collegiate three-pointer and reached double-digit scoring for the fifth time out of the last seven games.
Five different Blue Devils scored in the fourth quarter as Duke was able to hold on for the fourth ACC win of the season.
Goodchild hit 4-of-8 treys and now owns 65 three-pointers on the season, which is seven shy of Rebecca Greenwell’s Duke freshman record for treys in a season. She hit 12 three-pointers on the week, including eight at Notre Dame.
Akinbode-James finished the game with nine points and nine rebounds in 24 minutes.
Wake Forest (10-17, 1-13) was led by Ivana Raca with 12 points.
Duke will return home to host Clemson (Feb. 28) and North Carolina (March 3) in Cameron Indoor Stadium to close the regular season. The Clemson contest will tip at 7 p.m., on ACC Network Extra.
