DURHAM, N.C. – Duke redshirt junior quarterback Daniel Jones has been named to the Watch List for the 2018 Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award Presented by A. O. Smith, announced on Tuesday by the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Educational Foundation, Inc.
Established in 1987, the Unitas Award is presented annually to the nation’s top college quarterback based on character, citizenship, scholastic achievement, leadership qualities and athletic accomplishments. Candidates must be a college senior or fourth-year junior and on schedule to graduate with their class.
Jones is one of six ACC quarterbacks on the list joining Kelly Bryant (Clemson), Eric Dungey (Syracuse), Ryan Finley (N.C. State), Bryce Perkins (Virginia) and Malik Rosier (Miami).
Jones returns for his third campaign as Duke’s starting quarterback and was tabbed a team captain in 2017. In 25 career games (25 starts), he has completed 527-of-883 (.597) passes for 5,527 yards with 30 touchdowns and 20 interceptions. He owns a career pass efficiency rating of 118.94. On the ground, Jones has rushed 302 times for 1,004 yards (3.32) and 14 touchdowns.
He opens 2018 as one of two active quarterbacks nationally with 5,500 or more career passing yards and 1,000 or more career rushing yards, joining Syracuse’s Eric Dungey. Jones will also enter the 2018 season with active streaks of four games with one or more rushing touchdowns and three contests with two or more passing scores.
Jones, a 6-5, 220-pound native of Charlotte, N.C., was named the 2017 Quick Lane Bowl MVP and was an ACC All-Bowl Team choice by ESPN. During the Quick Lane Bowl, Jones set the game’s record for pass completions (27) while matching bowl game’s standard for touchdown passes (2). On Duke’s bowl game charts, his Quick Lane Bowl totals rank second for rushing yards by a quarterback (86), tied for second for rushing attempts by a quarterback (16), tied for second for total touchdown responsibility (3), third for touchdown passes, third for total offensive yards (338), fourth for pass completions and fifth for passing yards (252).
