DURHAM, N.C. – Though Duke Basketball has long had more Twitter followers than any other college athletics program in the nation, @DukeMBB recently raised the bar even higher when it became the first collegiate team account to surpass one million followers.
Since its inception in October 2016 with approximately 635,000 followers, @DukeMBB has grown by 57.5 percent in the last four months. During that time, @DukeMBB has averaged 22.5 million impressions, 1.5 million engagements and 550,000 video views per month on Twitter.
In the 30 days leading up to the attainment of the one million-follower mark, the @DukeMBB account experienced an 11.7 percent increase in followers.
“The Duke Basketball social media team is made up of some of the most talented and creative individuals in the industry,” said Duke Basketball special assistant Nolan Smith, who works closely with the social media group. “They continue to grow and impose their will upon the social media world on a daily basis. We have the best fans in the game and this group strives to provide them with content that matches their passion for Duke Basketball.”
Fueled on a daily basis by a coalition of Duke Basketball support staff members, the @DukeMBB team utilizes its comprehensive access to the program to tell the story of Duke Basketball through breaking news, player-driven content such as the Duke Blue Planet and Devils Life series, exclusive interviews and engaging graphics and video content.
“@DukeMBB is a major asset to our program,” said assistant coach Jon Scheyer. “Not only does it show the ins-and-outs of our program, it’s a great way for recruits to be connected to our program. There’s no other Twitter presence that compares because of its unique combination of player interaction and creativity from our social media team.”
Duke Basketball’s Twitter presence is also formidable enough to go head-to-head with the four major professional sports leagues in the United States. @DukeMBB currently has more Twitter followers than 24 NHL franchises, 22 MLB franchises, 16 NBA franchises and 15 NFL franchises for a total of 77 organizations across the four major professional sports leagues in the U.S.
With more than 526,000 followers, Duke Basketball (@dukembb) is also the most-followed college athletics program on Instagram.
