DURHAM, N.C. - Duke redshirt senior safety Jeremy Cash has been named a semifinalist for the Pop Warner National College Football Award, according to an announcement Thursday by Pop Warner Little Scholars, Inc. The accolade goes to a Pop Warner alumnus who has made a difference on the field, in the classroom and in his community.
Cash is one of four semifinalists, along with UCLA’s Jake Brendel, Wake Forest’s Brandon Chubb and the United States Military Academy’s Matt Giachinta. This year’s recipient will be announced the week of November 16. Former Duke and current Atlanta Falcons’ quarterback Sean Renfree won the award in 2012.
A 6-2, 210-pound product of Miami, Fla., Cash enters this week’s game ranked tied for third in the country in tackles for loss per game with 1.94 and is third in total TFL with 15.5. He stands second on the team with 70 tackles and paces the squad with 2.5 sacks, eight quarterback pressures and three forced fumbles.
A semifinalist for the Jim Thorpe Award and Chuck Bednarik Award, Cash was placed on six midseason All-America squads in October. He is also a two-time Lott IMPACT Trophy Player of the Week and the October 1 Bednarik Player of the Week.
In the classroom, Cash has already graduated from Duke with a bachelor’s in psychology. He is currently pursuing a master’s in liberal studies and was an Academic All-ACC Football Team choice in 2014. Entering the 2015 season, he held a 3.196 cumulative GPA.
As a volunteer, Cash has spent time with the Durham Rescue Mission, a faith-based, non-profit organization dedicated to providing food, support and shelter to those in need. He has also volunteered with the Christmas Gift Wrap, a project to provide presents for those in need in conjunction with neighboring N.C. Central University, and the Duke Campus Trash Cleanup, an annual project in which every member of the football program spends several hours clearing Duke University’s campus of trash. He has also worked with the Ronald McDonald House, visiting the local Ronald McDonald House and spending time with the ill children and their families, playing bingo weekly during the offseason.
The Pop Warner National College Football Award is presented during the annual Pop Warner Super Bowl at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Fla. Pop Warner created the National College Football Award in 2010 to honor a student-athlete who has continued to demonstrate Pop Warner’s fundamental values of sportsmanship, academics and community service at the next level.
Past winners include University of Nebraska cornerback and current New York Giant Prince Amukamara; University of Virginia and current Washington Redskins cornerback Chase Minnifield; former Duke University and current Atlanta Falcons quarterback Renfree; former Purdue University wide receiver Gary Bush; and former Stanford University and current New England Patriots safety Jordan Richards.
