WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The sixth-ranked Duke field hockey team scored six goals in the second quarter en route to a 9-0 victory at William & Mary Friday afternoon at Busch Field.
Duke improves to 3-2 overall, while William & Mary moves to 1-4.
Maggie Kondrath and
Julia Boehringer both had two goals and an assist, finishing their afternoons with a career-high five points.
Alaina McVeigh had a goal and two assists for four points.
The goalkeeping trio of
Kaiya Chepow,
Brooke Borzymowski and Abby Spear combined efforts for the shutout.
How it Happened
- The Blue Devils wasted no time getting on the board in the third minute as Duke's press forced William & Mary into a turnover in its defensive third. Ashley Stockdale collected the loose ball and slid it to Beach who beat Tribe keeper Alexandra de Jesus with a great hit for the 1-0 lead.
- Duke continued to frustrate William & Mary with its pressure, controlling the run of play and refusing to let the Tribe into any meaningful offensive action. The Blue Devils finished the opening quarter with five shots and a 1-0 advantage.
- It was a fast start for the Blue Devils in the second quarter, scoring three goals in the opening five minutes to grow the lead to, 4-0. Kondrath started the scoring spurt, tapping in a pass from Juliette Schulten on the back post for the 2-0 lead. Boehringer made it a 3-0 lead two minutes later with an assist from McVeigh who scored a goal of her own 90 seconds later to make it 4-0.
- The goals continued to come for the Blue Devils as senior Reagan Ciabattoni pushed the lead to five with her first career goal. Kondrath connected on a penalty stroke and Issy Carey capped the scoring, sending Duke into halftime with a 7-0 lead.
- In the 35th minute, Boehringer notched her second of the game with a hit from the top of the circle on a penalty corner. Graduate student goalie Brooke Borzymowski had her number called in the 44th minute, keeping the shutout alive with a save on a William & Mary penalty stroke.
- Ashley Stockdale became Duke's seventh goal scorer of the afternoon, redirecting Boehringer's sweep in the 51st minute for the 9-0 lead.
- Duke outshot the Tribe, 29-1, with the lone shot coming on the penalty stroke. Borzymowski had the lone save for the Blue Devils, while William & Mary's de Jesus and Emma Cari combining for 12 saves.
Notes
- Duke posted its first shutout of the season, holding William & Mary to one save.
- Alaina McVeigh finished the game with a goal and two assists to move into a tie for 19th in Duke history and one shy of becoming the 19th player to record 75 points. Her 33 goals give her sole possession of the 17th spot in the Duke records book.
- Maggie Kondrath and Julia Boehringer both registered a career-high five points, posting their first multiple goal games.
- Freshman back Juliette Schulten and senior Reagan Ciabattoni both recorded their first collegiate points with Schulten registering an assist and Ciabattoni finding the back of the cage.
