DURHAM, N.C. – The Duke men’s golf team heads to Dallas to wrap up its fall season at the Royal Oaks Intercollegiate (Oct. 27-28). The 54-hole tournament, utilizing 6-count-5 team scoring format, is being played at the par 71, 7,068-yard Royal Oaks Country Club.
“I’m excited to take a team back to Royal Oaks,” said head coach
Jamie Green.” With our relatively new squad in relation to the last time that we were playing that golf course, things will all be fresh for them. In fact, Royal Oaks underwent some reconstruction. They redid their greens similarly to what Duke did. We, along with all the rest of the teams that will be there, will have to adjust and take what the golf course gives us.”
Freshman
Adam Wood headlines the Blue Devil lineup and will be joined by sophomore
Andrew Bieber, freshman
Jake Shuman, sophomore
Alexander Matlari along with seniors
Michael Ricaurte and
Turner Southey-Gordon. Wood has finished in the top 20 in three of Duke’s four fall tournaments and owns a team-best 72.5 stroke average. The Zionsville, Ind., native has shot even-par or better in five of 11 rounds played and posted a counting team score in each round of the year.
Shuman, a freshman out of Massachusetts, is tied for third on the team with a 73.5 stroke average and is coming off a tie for eighth finish at the Rod Myers Invitational. He posted consecutive rounds of 71 at Duke’s home event to lead the Blue Devils to a fourth place finish.
Bieber fired back-to-back rounds of 73 at the Rod Myers Invitational to finish tied for 23rd, while Matlari shot 73-74 to tie for 27th at Duke University Golf Club in their lone tournament appearances of the fall.
Ricaurte enters the tournament with a 74.3 stroke average and a season-best tie for 11th finish at the Nike Golf Collegiate Invitational in Fort Worth, Texas. Southey-Gordon has a 75.5 stroke average across 11 rounds this season.
“It’s an interesting event in that we will be taking six guys and counting five each 18-hole round,” said Green. “There aren’t a lot of tournaments like this around the country throughout the year but there are a few, and it’s great to be able to take an extra guy on the road. All of our players work so hard and it’s great to be able to reward them and have them be able to play for the team and represent our university and our athletic department.”
Duke is joined in the field by host Baylor, Houston, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, SMU, Texas Tech and Texas-Arlington.
Tournament play opens Monday with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start with Duke beginning on holes 7-12 and paring with SMU, Oklahoma and Minnesota. Monday’s second round will start immediately after the conclusion of round one. Tuesday’s action will be an 18-hole final round with fixed start times and pairings based off 36-hole scores.
“I know the six guys we have traveling are very excited to do so,” Green continued. “ I’m also really proud of the guys in how they have been preparing themselves these last few days after a back-to-back tournament stretch that we had and hosting our own event. We’ve had a great couple of days of practice. Terrific competition within the team and a lot of really good vibes floating around. We’re looking forward to getting down there in the Texas heat one last time and see what we can do.”
