DURHAM, N.C. - The Duke track and fields teams have a packed weekend schedule ahead as the squads prepare for the first round of the 2010 NCAA Championships. This weekend's slate features three meets around the country: the IC4A/ECAC Championships, the Georgia Tech Invitational and the Carolina Qualifier.
The Blue Devils begin competition Friday, May 14 at the IC4A/ECAC Championships, held at Princeton University's Outdoor Track and Field Complex in Princeton, N.J. Emily Schwitzer and Mary Carleton Johnston lead things off at 7 p.m. in the steeplechase, followed by ACC Champion Ryan McDermott competing in the men's steeplechase at 7:20 p.m.
Also in the hunt for All-East honors are James Kostelnik and Bo Waggoner, both competing in the 5,000-meters at 8:45 p.m., and Josh Brewer, Andrew Brodeur and James Osborne, who will run the 10,000-meters at 9:15 p.m. On the women's side, Katelyn Bastert and Amanda Truelove are entered in the 5,000-meters at 7:40 p.m. with Sophia Ziemian rounding out the Duke contingent in the 10,000-meters at 8 p.m.
Friday evening also kicks off the Georgia Tech Invitational, hosted by the Yellow Jackets at the George C. Griffin Track in Atlanta from Friday, May 14 through Saturday, May 15. Suejin Ahn, Anna Farias-Eisner, Leslie Morrison and Emily Sherrard will run in the 1,500-meters at 8:10 p.m., while Joshua Lund, Cory Nanni and Ken Sullivan are set for the men's event to follow. Kristina Krasich closes out the first day of competition in the steeplechase at 9 p.m.
Day two in Atlanta starts with five Blue Devil women - Katie Apibunyopas, Devotia Moore, Leslie Morrison, Kate Van Buskirk and Esther Vermeer - competing in the 800-meters and concludes at 3 p.m. with Cydney Ross running the 400-meters.
Duke's field athletes will compete Saturday, May 15 through Sunday, May 16 at the Carolina Qualifier at North Carolina A&T's Irwin Belk Track. Karolina Haraldsdottir will be the only Blue Devil competing Saturday as she takes part in the heptathlon. In addition to Haraldsdottir, Sunday will see Michael Barbas in the shot put, Austin Gamble in the discus, Michael Kotecki in the high jump, Amy Fryt and Tony Shirk in the pole vault, and Andrea Hopkins, Shannon Sullivan and Amy Matulewicz in the javelin.
Sunday, May 16 marks the final day an athlete may qualify for the 2010 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships. The preliminary round of the Championships, held in Greensboro, N.C., is scheduled for Thursday, May 27 through Saturday, May 29.
