DURHAM, N.C. - Junior kicker Nick Maggio is one of 30 players named to the 2009 Lou Groza Collegiate Placekicking Award watch list.
Maggio, a returning starter from Leawood, Kan., became one of only three placekickers in school history to successfully convert 25 or more PATs without a miss in a single season last year. He was a perfect 28-of-28 on PATs while making 11 of his 14 field goal attempts. His 61 points were a team high while he ranked fifth in the ACC in field goal percentage. For his career he has made all 41 of his PAT attempts and is 13-of-19 on field goals with a long of 46 yards.
Of the 30 players on the watch list, Maggio is one of three kickers from the ACC, joining Miami's Matt Bosher and N.C. State's Josh Czajkowski. He is one of 18 kickers on the list that are underclassmen.
The Lou Groza Award will be presented on Dec. 10 as part of the ESPN Home Depot College Football Awards show. The three finalists will be honored at the 18th annual Lou Groza Award Banquet to be held at the Kravis Center in West Palm Beach, Fla. on Dec. 8.
