DURHAM, N.C. - Men's soccer midfielder Kevin Stevenson stopped by GoDuke.com for his senior profile on Sept. 24, 2007. K-Steve talks about who he'd have at his fantasy dinner, who his favorite athlete is, his advise to children and much more.
GoDuke.com: What is your nickname?
Kevin Stevenson: Originally it started off as K-Steve. I’m not real sure how that stuck, but that is what I have been left with. However, there have been many variations of the nickname--- ask Graham Dugoni and Fritz Woefel.
GD: If you could have dinner with four people from history (dead or alive), who would it be and why?
KS: Gandhi, Martin Luther King Jr., Abraham Lincoln. All these guys took chances on something they believed in and made a huge difference in the world. That’s only three though. The fourth one would have to be my mother’s father “Buzz.” He passed away when I was really young.
GD: What’s your favorite memory to date of your college career?
KS: There are so many. I think, in general, just walking into the locker room every day is a great memory. You could be having a horrible day, but once you walk into that locker room your mood brightens. I can’t really explain why, it just does. Another great memory was being named captain.
GD: What’s your favorite part of practice and why?
KS: It has to be when the coaches roll the ball out and just let us play. Our team is very competitive so it makes it a lot of fun to get out there and just compete.
GD: Being a few year’s removed from high school, what pops in your head when you think back to your high school career?
KS: High school sports and what college I would be attending. I can remember worrying about where I was going to end up for my freshman year. It turns out I ended up in a pretty good place.
GD: Who was your childhood hero?
KS: This is very clich?, but Michael Jordan. He was such a great competitor and he was so dominant. A very distinct memory from my childhood is all the championships he won with the Bulls.
GD: What’s the best compliment you’ve ever received?
KS: Haha. A few weeks ago after we beat Delaware, some guys on the team told me I played well. Then I passed by Tomek Charowski. He gave me a high five and told me that I looked like a Viking on the field. I did not really know what to make of it but I told him thanks. It was really funny.
GD: What is your advice to children?
KS: If you find something you love to do, then pursue it. Be passionate about the things you love and the people you love. Also, don’t be afraid to try new things or differentiate from the norm. Essentially, don’t be afraid to be an individual.
GD: What’s your favorite sport, other than your own, to watch on TV?
KS: College Basketball. I played in high school and I have always loved watching it. I like watching professional basketball as well, but it does not even compare to the intensity and passion of college basketball. I think that is what makes it so much better.
GD: What is your advice to this year’s freshmen on your team?
KS: Learn as much as you can about yourself in these next four years. Duke is a great place that offers so many incredible things to its students. Another piece of advice I would give them is when things seem bad, take a step back and realize that you are playing soccer at one of the best institutions in the country. Not many people get that chance.
GD: What concert do you most want to attend that you never have?
KS: Earth, Wind, and Fire. I grew up listening to them and I still really enjoy their music. I have been told by members of my Dad’s generation that it is the best concert they have ever seen.
GD: Where is your favorite place to play outside of Duke?
KS: Maryland. It is the most hostile soccer environment I have ever played in. Their fans hate Duke so it makes it that much better when we beat them at their place.
GD: What’s your favorite video game?
KS: Halo 2. If we feel like we haven’t gotten all of our competitive juices out at practice, we take it to the sticks. Michael Videira, Tomek, Greg, Andrew, Spencer and I all partake in these legendary battles.
GD: Who’s your favorite musical artist?
KS: I have many favorite artists but right now I would have to say Ne-Yo. It seems that anything he touches right now turns into great music.
GD: Who’s had the most impact on your life and why?
KS: My parents. I could write an essay about how much they have impacted my life, but in a nutshell, they have always supported me and always instilled confidence in me no matter what I was doing.
